Cuando Jesús dio a sus discípulos la asignación de predicar las buenas nuevas por toda la Tierra, ya sabía que se iban a encontrar en una atmósfera dañina, un entorno dominado por Satanás y por el espíritu del mundo (Mat. 10:16; 1 Juan 5:19). Jesús estaba tan preocupado por el bienestar de sus discípulos que la noche antes de morir oró a su Padre con las palabras del texto de hoy. Jesús previno a sus seguidores contra el peligro de sucumbir al sueño espiritual, un letargo que también puede ocasionar la muerte. Él les dijo: “Manténganse despiertos [...] para que logren escapar de todas estas cosas que están destinadas a suceder, y estar en pie delante del Hijo del hombre” (Luc. 21:34-36). Pero Jesús también les prometió que su Padre les enviaría espíritu santo para ayudarlos a recordar lo que habían aprendido, así como a mantenerse despiertos y permanecer firmes (Juan 14:26).

When Jesus gave his disciples the assignment to preach the good news worldwide, he knew that he was sending them into a hazardous environment, one dominated by Satan and the spirit of the world. (Matt. 10:16; 1 John 5:19) So concerned was Jesus about his disciples that on the night before he died, he prayed to his Father saying the words above. Jesus warned his followers about the danger of what could amount to a death-dealing spiritual sleep. He urged his disciples: “Keep awake . . . that you may succeed in escaping all these things that are destined to occur, and in standing before the Son of man.” (Luke 21:34-36) Happily, though, Jesus also promised that his Father would provide holy spirit to refresh their memories and to help them stay awake and be strong.—John 14:26.
