Ante canas debes levantarte [en señal de respeto], y tienes que mostrar consideración a la persona del envejecido (Lev. 19:32).
En algunas partes del mundo no está bien visto que los niños estén de pie al lado de un adulto sentado, pues quedarían por encima de él. Por eso se sientan en el suelo junto a él como señal de respeto. Además, evitan darles la espalda a los mayores. Claro, cada cultura tiene su forma particular de mostrar respeto a los demás. En cualquier caso, este ejemplo nos recuerda el mandamiento de la Ley mosaica que leemos en el texto de hoy. Lamentablemente, en muchos lugares se ha perdido el respeto que antes había hacia la gente. De hecho, la falta de respeto está a la orden del día. La Biblia da mucha importancia a honrar a los demás, es decir, a tratarlos con profundo respeto. Por ejemplo, nos exhorta a honrar a Jehová y a Jesús (Juan 5:23). También nos manda honrar a nuestros familiares, a nuestros hermanos en la fe y a personas que no pertenecen a la congregación (Rom. 12:10; Efe. 6:1, 2; 1 Ped. 2:17).

Before gray hair you should rise up [in respect], and you must show consideration for the person of an old man.—Lev. 19:32.
In some parts of the world, it is the custom for young children to honor adults by kneeling respectfully when in their company. In this way, they do not stand taller than those who are older. In these communities, it is also viewed as an act of disrespect for a child to turn his or her back to an adult. Although respect is shown in different ways in various cultures, such displays of respect remind us of the Mosaic Law and the command stated in today’s text. Sadly, in many places it is no longer common to show honor to others. In fact, disrespect is the order of the day. God’s Word puts a high value on showing honor. It tells us to honor Jehovah and Jesus. (John 5:23) We are also commanded to show honor to family members and fellow believers as well as to some outside the congregation.—Rom. 12:10; Eph. 6:1, 2; 1 Pet. 2:17.
