Toda la tierra continuaba siendo de un solo lenguaje y de un solo conjunto de palabras (Gén. 11:1).
Cuando Jehová creó a Adán, no solo le concedió la capacidad de hablar, sino también la de formar nuevas palabras que ampliaran su vocabulario (Gén. 2:19, 20, 23). ¡Qué regalo tan maravilloso! Gracias a él podemos comunicarnos incluso con nuestro Padre celestial y alabar su glorioso nombre. Durante los primeros diecisiete siglos de existencia humana, se hablaba una sola lengua, “un solo conjunto de palabras”. Pero las cosas cambiaron cuando estalló la rebelión de los días de Nemrod. Desobedeciendo las órdenes de Jehová, un grupo de personas se reunió en lo que más tarde se conocería como Babel con la firme intención de quedarse a vivir allí. Emprendieron la construcción de una enorme torre, pero no para darle gloria a Dios, sino para hacerse “un nombre célebre”. Por eso, Jehová los confundió haciendo que hablaran idiomas distintos y así los obligó a diseminarse por toda la Tierra (Gén. 11:4-8).

All the earth continued to be of one language and of one set of words.—Gen. 11:1.
Jehovah gave the first human, Adam, the ability not only to speak but also to coin new words and thus expand his vocabulary. (Gen. 2:19, 20, 23) What a wonderful gift this has proved to be! It has even enabled mankind to communicate with their heavenly Father and to praise his glorious name. During the first 17 centuries of human existence, everyone spoke just one language, having “one set of words.” Then came the rebellion of Nimrod’s day. Contrary to Jehovah’s instructions, disobedient humans gathered at what later came to be called Babel, determined to remain in one location. They started to build a massive tower, not to give Jehovah glory, but to “make a celebrated name” for themselves. So Jehovah confused the original language of those rebels and caused them to speak various tongues. Thus, they were scattered over all the surface of the earth.—Gen. 11:4-8.
