¿De qué provecho le es al hombre ganar todo el mundo y pagarlo con perder su alma? ¿Qué, realmente, daría el hombre en cambio por su alma? (Mar. 8:36, 37.)
Sabemos que Jesús no vino a la Tierra para darnos salud, dinero y una larga vida en este mundo. Vino para ofrecernos la oportunidad de vivir para siempre en un nuevo mundo, algo de mucho más valor para nosotros (Juan 3:16). Así, cuando el cristiano lee la primera pregunta de Jesús, seguramente la entiende de la siguiente manera: “¿De qué le sirve al hombre ganar todo el mundo y pagarlo con perder la posibilidad de vivir para siempre?”. La respuesta es evidente: no le sirve de nada (1 Juan 2:15-17). La segunda pregunta de Jesús la podríamos plantear así: “¿Qué sacrificios estoy dispuesto a hacer para vivir en el nuevo mundo?”. La respuesta se hace patente por nuestra forma de vivir y demuestra si nuestra esperanza es sólida o no (compárese con Juan 12:25).

Of what benefit is it for a man to gain the whole world and to forfeit his soul? What, really, would a man give in exchange for his soul?—Mark 8:36, 37.
We know that Jesus did not come to earth to give us health, wealth, and a long life in this world. He came to open up the opportunity of living forever in the new world, and the prospect of that life is what we value highly. (John 3:16) A Christian would understand Jesus’ first question to mean, “Of what benefit is it for a man to gain the whole world and to forfeit his hope of everlasting life?” The answer is, Of no benefit at all. (1 John 2:15-17) To help us answer Jesus’ second question, we might well ask ourselves, ‘How much am I willing to sacrifice now to make my hope of life in the new world sure?’ Our answer to that question, as seen in our life course, reveals the strength of that hope in our hearts.—Compare John 12:25.
