Los exhortamos, hermanos: amonesten a los desordenados, hablen confortadoramente a las almas abatidas, den su apoyo a los débiles, tengan gran paciencia para con todos (1 Tes. 5:14).
Los discípulos de Cristo debemos amar a nuestros hermanos, y una manera de hacerlo es tratando de comprender sus sentimientos (1 Ped. 3:8). Quizá no nos resulte fácil entender cómo se siente un hermano que padece depresión grave o una enfermedad crónica, especialmente si nunca hemos pasado por algo así. Cabe notar, sin embargo, que Jesús comprendió a los enfermos aunque él nunca tuvo problemas de salud. ¿Cómo podemos tener una actitud similar? Escuchando pacientemente cuando un hermano que está sufriendo nos abre su corazón. Podríamos preguntarnos: “¿Cómo me sentiría si estuviera en su situación?”. Si somos capaces de percibir cómo se sienten los demás, nos será más fácil hablar “confortadoramente a las almas abatidas”. Esta es otra manera de imitar a Jesús.

We exhort you, brothers, admonish the disorderly, speak consolingly to the depressed souls, support the weak, be long-suffering toward all.—1 Thess. 5:14.
As followers of Christ, we are called on to demonstrate our love by showing “fellow feeling.” (1 Pet. 3:8) It may not be easy to understand the feelings of a fellow believer who is suffering from a chronic illness or deep depression—especially if we have never experienced such things ourselves. Still, Jesus empathized with the sick even though he himself was never sick. How can we cultivate similar empathy? By patiently listening as suffering ones open up their hearts to us. We could also ask ourselves, ‘If I were in their situation, how would I feel?’ If we cultivate sensitivity to the feelings of others, we will be better able to “speak consolingly to the depressed souls.” Thus we will be following Jesus.
