¡Miren, el Cordero de Dios! (Juan 1:36.)
En tiempos bíblicos, un medio importante para acercarse a Dios y obtener su perdón era sacrificar ovejas. Por ejemplo, al ver que Abrahán estaba dispuesto a sacrificar a su hijo, Jehová le dijo que no le hiciera daño y le dio un carnero (es decir, una oveja macho) para que lo ofreciera en lugar de Isaac (Gén. 22:12, 13). Antes de ser liberados de Egipto, los israelitas usaron ovejas para celebrar “la pascua de Jehová” (Éxo. 12:1-13). Y más tarde se estableció en la Ley mosaica el sacrificio de ovejas y cabras, entre otros animales (Éxo. 29:38-42; Lev. 5:6, 7). Sin embargo, ninguno de estos sacrificios —ni ningún otro efectuado por seres humanos— podía expiar de manera permanente los pecados ni librar de la muerte a nadie (Heb. 10:1-4). En cambio, Jesús es “el Cordero de Dios que quita el pecado del mundo” (Juan 1:29). Por sí solo, este hecho convierte a Jesús en un tesoro superior a cualquier tesoro que se haya descubierto en la historia.

See, the Lamb of God!—John 1:36.
Throughout the Bible, sheep played a notable role in the remission of sin and approach to God. For instance, after Abraham had demonstrated that he was willing to offer his son Isaac, he was told not to harm Isaac and was provided with a ram, or male sheep, as a substitute. (Gen. 22:12, 13) When the Israelites were delivered from Egypt, sheep again played a significant role, this time as part of “Jehovah’s passover.” (Ex. 12:1-13) Further, the Mosaic Law provided for the sacrifice of various animals, including sheep and goats. (Ex. 29:38-42; Lev. 5:6, 7) None of those sacrifices—in fact, no sacrifice offered by humans—could bring permanent release from sin and death. (Heb. 10:1-4) Jesus, on the other hand, is “the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world.” (John 1:29) This fact alone makes Jesus a treasure that outranks any material treasure that has ever been found.
