En cuanto al árbol del conocimiento de lo bueno y lo malo, no debes comer de él, porque en el día que comas de él, positivamente morirás (Gén. 2:17).
En el mismo inicio de la historia, Jehová dio a conocer con toda claridad su propósito para la humanidad. ¿De qué manera? Al indicarle a Adán que si era obediente, podría vivir para siempre (Gén. 2:9; 3:22). Desafortunadamente, Adán perdió la perfección. Sus primeros descendientes sin duda sabían lo que había ocurrido. Además, veían las consecuencias: se había bloqueado la entrada al jardín de Edén y la gente estaba envejeciendo y muriendo (Gén. 3:23, 24). La duración de la vida se hacía cada vez más corta. Aunque Adán vivió 930 años, Sem, que sobrevivió al Diluvio, solo vivió 600, y su hijo Arpaksad, 438. Taré, el padre de Abrahán, vivió 205 años; Abrahán, 175; Isaac, 180, y Jacob, 147 (Gén. 5:5; 11:10-13, 32; 25:7; 35:28; 47:28). La gente debió de entender lo que esto significaba: la esperanza de vivir para siempre se había perdido.

As for the tree of the knowledge of good and bad you must not eat from it, for in the day you eat from it you will positively die.—Gen. 2:17.
Jehovah’s purpose for mankind was made evident at the very beginning of human history. God clearly indicated that Adam would live forever if he was obedient. (Gen. 2:9; 3:22) Adam’s early descendants no doubt learned about man’s fall from perfection, which was confirmed by visible evidence. The entrance to the garden of Eden was blocked, and people grew old and died. (Gen. 3:23, 24) With the passing of time, the human life span declined. Adam lived for 930 years. The Flood survivor Shem lived for only 600 years, and his son Arpachshad for 438 years. Abraham’s father, Terah, lived for 205 years. The life span of Abraham was 175 years, that of his son Isaac was 180 years, and that of Jacob was 147 years. (Gen. 5:5; 11:10-13, 32; 25:7; 35:28; 47:28) Many people must have realized what this decline meant—the prospect of everlasting life had been lost!
